Tipping Your Cleaners
Tipping a house cleaner isn't required, but it's a nice way to say thank you for a job well done — and a lot of Andover-area homeowners ask us what's typical. Here's a straightforward answer.
Is tipping expected? No. Unlike restaurant service, tipping a cleaning company is optional. A fair, on-time payment for the work is what matters most. A tip is simply a bonus for great service.
How much do people typically tip? For a standard visit, many homeowners tip somewhere in the range of $10–$20 per cleaner, or roughly 10–20% of the job cost for a bigger one-time deep clean or move-out cleaning. There's no fixed rule — tip what feels right for the work done.
When should you tip more? A larger tip (or a bonus at the end of the year) is common when a team goes above and beyond — tackling something extra you didn't ask for, being especially careful with a tricky space, or handling a stressful move-out clean on a tight deadline.
Cash or card? Both work. Cash left out with a thank-you note is simple and appreciated. If you book and pay online, you can also ask about adding a tip to your payment, or hand it to the crew directly when they finish.
What if you're on a recurring schedule? Many clients tip after each visit; others choose to tip seasonally, like around the holidays, to thank their regular crew for the whole year. Either approach is completely normal.
The bottom line: tipping is a kind gesture, not an obligation. The best way to show appreciation, tip or no tip, is clear communication before the visit and a quick note afterward if something stood out.
